2023 Fundraising Banquet

To our Valued Past and Present Members,

Your support has always been the foundation of our mission to advocate for the rights of hunters that call British Columbia home. In partnership with Safari Club International we have been able to direct funds not only raised thru our chapter’s efforts but also funds from chapters around the world to sponsor wildlife projects in Western Canada and advocate in our Nation’s Capital of Ottawa on behalf of Hunters and Gun owners.

As we come out of the shutdowns of the covid pandemic that prohibited our ability to gather and celebrate our hunting culture, your involvement, assistance and financial backing has never been more important.  We have determined and organized opposition to our way of life and need to collectively continue to raise our voice in opposition to these ideals of the Liberal government and special interests groups that have their ear.

Our most significant annual contribution to this cause is our West Coast Chapter Fundraising Banquet that is upcoming on April 22, 2023 at the Langley Banquet Hall. Those of you who have attended our past dinners can attest to the good food, conversation and prizes that we auctioned and raffled off all contributed to a fantastic time together raising money for this important cause.

We expect the very same this year with our Live Auction, silent auction, raffles and door prizes collected with the support of our many important business sponsors. Check your calendars and make yourself and fellow hunting supports available to come out.

Click this link to purchase tickets to the banquet. Of Special Note, the Purchase a Table will enter you into the Door Prize Draw of a Hunt to Namibia. If you have any donations for the prize tables available, please email our committee at info@sciwestcoast.org

Look forward to seeing you on April 22.

In appreciation,

February 2023 Update for Members

Hello everyone!  The executive of the SCI Westcoast Chapter would like to wish you a prosperous and healthy year.

Have you wondered if the dollars you give to SCI ever come back to Canada?   Quite a few people are under the impression that the organization is strictly about the USA and Africa, which is far from the truth.  Click the link to see the projects SCI has supported in Western Canada. https://safariclubfoundation.org/western-canada-a-hot-spot-for-safari-club-conservation-projects/?fbclid=IwAR0Bj05godNpeVP5r71nl1AsPCjvXhZBP9a84FcHOXpzxoXGYJ_jdSsrSuA

SCI is also taking up the fight against Bill C-21.  Even though there was a slight victory recently, the battle is not over.  Sign the petition here https://act.safariclub.org/FEWsLzY?fbclid=IwAR1sWl21k8JHwk7NlS5bMr9E0lRc1tl6DgbkrZwo52D7AjbFOmurvwHZYWI

We would like to thank Jason Valyear (Past President) and Tammy Wood (Director) for their time dedicated to the Chapter, and wish them well in their future endeavors.  The new executive of the West Coast Chapter consists of Keith MacKinnon (President); Adam Tayler (Vice President); Ken Pamplin (Director); Matt Siemens (Secretary); and Mark Porter (Director).

The SCI Convention is being held in Nashville, Tennessee this year from Feb 22-25.  If any of you are going to be there, reach out so we can meet you or drop by Gunderson’s Jewelers on Thursday from 15:00-17:00 for a reception specifically for members of Canadian Chapters. Besides seminars to attend, there will be auctions to raise funds for wildlife  projects and legal battles to defend your right and opportunity to go hunting.  You can bid online here: https://www.onlinehuntingauctions.com/2023-SCI-CONVENTION_as87306

March 3rd-5th we have a Booth at the BC Sportsmen’s Show held at Tradex in Abbotsford.  There will be SCI products for sale, as well as memberships and tickets to our upcoming banquet.

Our chapter banquet and fundraiser is being held on April 22, 2023 at the Langley Banquet Hall at 3227 264th St in Aldergrove.  We have picked a firearm friendly venue that will set up and clean up the tables, however, we are looking for volunteers to help with the display of prizes and auction items.  If you can come out for 2 hours to lend a hand, please contact us at info@sciwestcoast.org.  Many hands make light work. If you have an item or service you are able to donate to raise funds for conservation and protection of our right to hunt, please contact adam.tayler@sciwestcoast.org

Tickets for the banquet are $120 each, or you can buy a table of eight for $960.  Take note that an African hunt will be given away that night, but the only way to be eligible for the draw is to purchase a table.  Be aware that we require to let the kitchen know how many people are attending so the correct amount of food is made.  There will NOT be tickets sold at the door and ticket sales will be cut off on Sunday April 9th.  Please purchase tickets here: https://www.sciwestcoast.org/online-banquet-ticket-purchase

Be sure to like and follow our page of Facebook, as well as share our posts.  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085518843346

If you need to renew your membership, or you know someone who wants to join SCI, memberships are available through our website https://www.sciwestcoast.org/membership-application

Lastly, if there are projects here in BC you would like to see SCI sponsor, please send keith.mackinnon@sciwestcoast.org and email thoroughly explaining the details.

Thankfully yours,

Update for our Members

The past few years have brought changes to the hunting landscape that few were able to predict. And it is our responsibility as hunters to gather and protect our rights to hunt.

The Board of SCI West Coast BC Chapter is happy to announce that we are able to hold our “annual” fundraiser/banquet in the spring of 2023. We are hoping that you will join us on April 22, 2023 at Langley Banquet Hall located at #6 3227 264th Ave, Aldergrove BC.

Our banquet offers a family friendly experience to meet other hunters and guides. We have games, silent auctions, raffles, and even a live auction. Every year we have new items and experiences for every level. We bring together hunts and experiences; ranging from youth hunts to safaris; from the farthest reaches of the world.

This annual fundraising banquet is the pinnacle of our fundraising each year and the proceeds go towards conservation and education. They help us raise awareness of the importance of proper wildlife management and work to ensure we maintain and even expand hunting opportunities locally.

Money raised in our past events has been used in our back yard as well as fighting to maintain hunting on a global scale through the SCI Foundation.

As we approach the planning stage for our banquet, we need more members to help by volunteering to pull this off.  We are also currently looking for 2 additional board members for the positions of Secretary and Treasurer. If you have the skills and are passionate about getting new and young hunters into the sport and preserving our hunting rights through science based conservation, please let us know. The more people we have, the stronger we will be.

In addition to the fundraiser, SCI is currently running a membership drive for new membership and renewals. Should you need to re-new or know someone that would like to become a member until Nov 15, 2022 if you purchase a 3-year membership for $150 and receive a KUIU gift card for $150. That is a very hard deal to pass on!

3rd Annual Banquet Fundraiser - CANCELLED

With the current uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic the board
of directors for the SCI West Coast Chapter has voted unanimously in
favour of canceling our 3rd annual fundraiser banquet. With the current
mandate from British Columbia's Provincial Health Officer restricting
gatherings to less than 250 people we felt it was the best decision for
the health and well-being of our membership and their families at this
time.

This was not an easy decision as our annual fundraiser banquet is the
primary source of income for our Chapter to be able to fund projects and
events throughout the year. We will continue to monitor this pandemic
and assess if we will be able to reschedule. Out of fairness to the
generous donors we have also decided not to proceed without on-line
auction.

We strongly encourage everyone to follow the directions we are given
from the medical professionals. We appreciate everyone's understanding.
If you had already purchased your banquet ticket we will be in contact
with you to refund your money.

Grizzly Bear Class Action Law Suit

This past week Ron Fleming, owner of Love Bros. & Lee, filed a class action law suit seeking compensation for all B.C. guide outfitting businesses allegedly harmed by the hunting ban.

The Tahltan Central Government, which represents the Tahltan and Iskut First Nations, is in support of Fleming’s initiative to pursue the class action law suit. Although this law suit is seeking compensation for the lost revenue for guide outfitters it will have a ripple effect for resident hunters. This law suit will now have to be certified in Supreme court as a class action before moving forward. The final ruling is anticipated to take a few years.

Your SCI West Coast board members have been in contact with Ron Fleming and GOABC Executive Director, Scott Ellis, to applaud them on taking the initiative to file this law suit. During our conversations we were advised that GOABC is more than willing to accept changes to the hunting regulations requiring hunters to keep all edible portions of a Grizzly Bear if the hunt is reinstated. We have offered our support and are actively working to back this initiative through public education programs and financial support.

Further updates will be posted on the SCI West Coast website at www.sciwestcoast.org

2nd Annual SCI West Coast Banquet

The date for the 2nd Annual SCI West Coast Banquet has been set for April 6th, 2019 at the Murrayville Hall located at 21667 48th Avenue, Langley, British Columbia. This year’s event will again feature an auction with many amazing guided hunts and fishing trips. If you enjoyed the wild game cooking from Sossy Outdoors spread the word and bring some friends.

Tickets will be $90 which includes your dinner and door prize entry. If you enjoyed last year’s banquet, this year is shaping up to be even better. A maximum of 200 tickets are being sold for this event so hurry and purchase now. For tickets contact an SCI West Coast board member or e-mail us at info@sciwestcoast.org.

If you are unable to make it to the banquet in person you will still be able to bid on auction items. We have partnered with onlinehuntingauctions.comto reach a greater number of hunters, conservationists and outdoor enthusiasts.

Southern Mountain Caribou

The Provincial and Federal Governments are actively discussing plans to create mass closures to users for a large portion of crown land in Northern British Columbia. The closures are being discussed as part of a plan to help the Southern Mountain Caribou herd which is currently listed as threatened. The Klinse-za herd has been increased from 16 animals to 80 animals for the past four years.

We believe that the recent government supported wolf population management in portions of the Province have greatly assisted in the recovery of these Caribou herds. Predator management will be a key issue to see the continue recovery of ungulates populations.

The Provincial and Federal governments who have been working with First Nations in the areas are poised to sign an agreement banning activities in 2019.

A group of residents in North British Columbia have started a petition to speak out against these proposed changes. If you haven’t signed the petition go to change.org and checkout “Your back country access is being seriously threatened right now (BC Peace River Region)”.

SCI West Coast will again be at the BC Sportsmen’s Show at the Tradex in Abbotsford, British Columbia from March 1-3, 2019. Please drop by our booth where we will be happy to discuss how we are putting the interest of hunters first in the Province of British Columbia.

September Member Letter

The Board of SCI West Coast Chapter to take a moment to provide our members with an update to what has been happening as we head into the fall hunting season.

In June, we hosted our first Annual SCI Westcoast Banquet. It was a success and we could not have done it without the support of our Sponsors and SCI members, of not only our chapter but chapters around the world. If you were not able to attend you missed out on a tremendous gathering to support hunting in BC and make sure you are there next year.

This event showcased the great table fare that game animals are thanks to Tammy Wood of Sossy Outdoors and her team for putting together such an outstanding meal.

With the in-house raffles, Door Prizes and Live/Online Auction, we were able to raise approximately $30,000that will seed our ability to accomplish some projects in B.C. and help bring awareness to the sustainability of hunting in BC.

Since starting this chapter in May 2017 with 30members we have been able to more than double our membership.  Our current membership is 84 active members. There are 30 members thathave not yet renewed for 2018-19 so please do so online at www.safariclub.org If you are not planning on renewing please share with us a confidential email to info@sciwestcoast.orgas to what we can do to gain back your support.   It is important that we continue to grow our membership numbers to gain a stronger voice and positively impact the preservation of our hunting heritage in BC. There is true strength in numbers and we have had a great start in this inaugural year to do so.

The Board would like to stress that our Chapter members be active in what we select as our Chapter Projects and the successful execution of the plans. Therefore, would like to ask for idea submissions from the membership as to what project we can do in 2019 to make a positive impact in our BC community. This can be anything from Youth initiatives, goodwill, charities, conservation, habitat enhancement, etc… Where you feel we can make an impact please make a suggestion. These suggestions will be evaluated against our chapter values and after careful consideration the projects will then be selected. Project committees of our members will then be formed to accomplish these goals.

There is a form for submissions attached to this email or available for download from our website so you complete and send back to info@sciwestcoast.org.

As our chapter moves forward, we anticipate the SCI West Coast Annual Banquet to be even more successful next year and have already started working on venues, Auction items and prizes.  As we finalize the details on dates and location we’ll get the word out so you can add it to your calendars and invite your friends. If you have any feedback on how to improve our event or input on what type of hunts you would like to see made available for the fundraising effort, please send us a note.

Good luck this fall in your pursuits and when you are around the camp fire please share with your group the how much it means to you to be able to share in their company and protect the rights to do so. Invite them to join together with you to conserve this important part of our Canadian heritage and we will be able to ensure it continues forward for generations to come.

May 2018 Letter

SCI West Coast members,

We would like to thank all current members for their continued support. It has been a while since our last update to our members.  Although an update email is overdue, we have been continually working to turn our new chapter into a success.  The process may be slow at times but be assured that we are focused on creating a group that can have a positive influence towards protecting hunting within British Columbia.

We recently had a booth at the BC Sportsman’s & BC Hunting show at the Tradex March 2-4.  We had the opportunity to meet numerous people, explain what we are about and signed up many new members.   Our membership is growing, and this is key as we need a good membership base to do the work we hope to do, as well as to be able to offer benefits to our members.

We are also in the process of providing our members with an online western Canadian magazine to provide more Canadian content for everyone.  At the show we were also able to make contacts within several hunting related industries and to develop some relationships that we hope will be a benefit to our chapter in the future.

Our website has now been created and is live.  Please check it out at www.sciwestcoast.org.  We’ve also started a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sciwestcoast/ and will be adding to our social media presence in the near future.  Look us up and give our page a “like”.  Both the website and Facebook page will have updates added periodically.  Help us get our name out there by engaging in content and sharing posts.  This will be one of the more effective ways for us to grow and give all our members a stronger voice.  Your participation is necessary.

Our first fundraiser was held last June.  This was a pig roast at Vice President Ken Pamplin’s home.  The event was good for our club as we were able to sign up numerous new members as well as raise the funds needed to set up our chapter.  Now that the setup phase of our chapter is complete, we will be having our second fundraiser in June again.  This will be our first annual banquet and will be held June 23rdin at WEST LANGLEY HALL, 9400 208thStreet, Langley BC .  This is a change of venue that was originally printed on the Tickets so please note this change.

We will have Tammy Wood of Master Chef Canada and Sossy Outdoors catering the event and our dinner will include several domestic dishes to choose from as well as some interesting appetizer dishes made from game meats including Mountain Lion.

We have various raffle and prize items donated including cougar/lynx combination hunt with Skinner Creek hunts in Tatlayoka Lake BC, and other hunting prizes including wolf, turkey, and several exotic destinations as well. There will also be guns and gear and gift certificates to auction off.  Tickets for this event will be $90 per person and our seating will be limited so please do secure your tickets sooner rather than later.  All are welcome, no need to be an SCI member to attend.

Tickets are available now for 3 of the draws that will be featured at the banquet:

1.    Cougar/lynx hunt with Skinner Creek.  Tickets are $100 each and there will only be 200 sold.  Skinner creek is one of BC’s premier cat hunting operations and is a high success hunt.

2.    Hunt in Namibia for 2 people.  Includes 4 days hunting 2 baboons, 2 warthogs, 1 common duiker and 1 red hartebeest. Days can be added as well as species. The hunt value is $5150USD Tickets for this draw are only $40 and there will only be 100 tickets sold.

3.    Gun Draw, Savage 7mm-08 rifle with scope tickets are $10.

Please contact any SCI board member to purchase tickets or email info@sciwestcoast.org

Both the dinner and the raffle items are really important to the future success of our organization so please come out and support us and bring friends and family.  The goal of our chapter is to raise funds to bring awareness to the non-hunting public on the importance of wildlife management within BC.  The role that the North American Wildlife management model has played in the increased numbers and success of wildlife across BC including the role that predator hunting plays in the well being of all species in BC.

Lastly, with spring bear season just under way, Black Powder Tannery has recently offered 10% discounts off of tanning for SCI Westcoast members.

If there are any concerns, issues or suggestions you may have or if you’re looking for ways to help out please feel free to email our info@sciwestcoast.orgaddress or call one of the board members.

Our banquet is fast approaching and will be paramount towards our success as a chapter.  As this is our first banquet as a chapter please let us know as soon as possible to purchase tickets as we need to gather a solid idea of attendance.

Sincerely,

SCI West Coast, Board of Directors
